tequila negroni

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe

This tequila negroni is a bold twist on the classic gin-based negroni. The swap is simple, but the distinct sweet agave and crisp fresh pepper notes are delightful.

The lively agave flavors complement the bitter orange and sweet vermouth with a clean and citrusy finish. And in this cocktail, I prefer to use reposado tequila for a touch of dried fruit, honey, and spice.

This is a sweet, strong, and deliciously nuanced cocktail that you’re bound to love!

best tequilas for this negroni recipe:

Use a good blanco tequila for crisp, clean, lively agave flavors.

  • You can expect an herbaceous flavor profile with plenty of fresh agave, jalapeño, and bold citrus peel.
  • You don't need to splurge on super-premium sipping tequilas. Look for bottles in the $35- $50 range for a ton of brightness and flavor.
  • We especially love Olmeca Altos Plata, Cascahuín Blanco, El Tesoro Blanco, and Emerald Spear Blanco Tequila.

Experiment with reposado tequila!

  • Reposado tequila needs to be aged at least 2 months in a barrel (and up to 12 months), which gives a smooth texture and adds notes of sweet coconut, vanilla, and spice. I love that the character is enhanced with a touch of oak influence, but the agave is still present. Plus, the spice and toasty sweetness go so well with Campari and sweet vermouth.
  • We love El Tesoro Reposado, Ocho Reposado, Herradura Reposado, and Cantera Negra Reposado!

The tequila negroni is a bold twist on the classic gin-based negroni. It’s an intensely flavored cocktail that’s sweet and refreshingly bitter, with notes of fresh agave, orange peel, and crisp pepper.
